One Question Wednesday – Idols

Welcome to One Question Wednesdays.

Today all we want to do is offer you a question that will help your students grow closer to Jesus, learn more about themselves, and develop the gift and calling of leadership that God has given them.

Use this question as a prompt for a devotion, an introduction to a lesson, or as a discussion topic whenever you meet with your students collectively or individually.  These questions make great mentoring prompts.

Make sure you ask yourself this question as well.  You never know what God is looking to do in your heart today.

Today’s Question Is…

What are Your Idols?

The fact is we all have idols.  Whether it’s money, video games, our significant others, or whatever, we all have idols in our lives from time to time (and some of us all the time).  The tough part is getting our students to recognize them in their own lives.  It’s a good idea to start with what an idol really is:  anything that comes between a person and God is an idol.  Anything we rely on instead of God is an idol.  When put in those terms, it’s easier to identify those things in our lives that sit where God should in our hearts.

  1. I am actually in a Kelly Minter bible study right now called “No Other Gods” and it is all about idolatry. I agree that it can be hard to even acknowledge all the idols we set up in our lives. Something that stuck out to me in study last week is calling out idols when it comes to what motivates you, what scares you, or anything you place your trust in…besides God. We claim that we worship the one true God, but all too often we have other people and things functioning as our gods.

    • Thanks Ashley.
You’re right. With all the things that clamor for attention in our fast-paced lives, it’s very difficult to know which ones are taking God’s place as number one.
